Abstract
The major practice program was conducted to provide the student practitioner experience in the application of agricultural technology, gain insights into the farming problems of small farms and learn from the experience n the barrio practice in community that practices multiple cropping with coconut.
The preliminary phase of the practice was conducted at the UPLB Campus. The barrio practice was conducted in Barrio Tranca, Bay, Laguna. Activities in the barrio practice include case studies and social interaction with farmer cooperators, help in putting up school seed orchard of cacao under coconut, teaching of elementary agriculture class, leadership seminars and encouraging the activation of barrio projects and farmer cooperative.
Community problems identified during the major practice are: 1) unadoptability of some available technical findings to the actual farm conditions, 2) lack of technology dissimininators, 3) lack of technical materials written in u language comprehensible to farmers, 4) farm tenancy which brings about uncertainty of farm tenure and unfavorable crop share for the tenant farmer, 5) poor educational background and lack of social consciousness of the farmers, and 6) poor community service and incompetent local leaders.
The problems identified could only be solved through a concerted national effort of all the affected sectors, not only by the people of Bo. Tranca, since most of these problems are but the branches of certain external factors like land ownership, government policies, local and national leadership and the pervaiding socio-political climate of the country. Whatever solutions therefore afforded by the student practitioner are but short run in orientation.
Recommended solutions to the problems are: 1) further research on technoloy adoptable to the farm situation should be done, 2) need of more technology dissiminators to bring down the message of technology, 3) transcription of research findings into Filipino 4) implementation of genuine land reform to all kinds of cropland, 5) continuance of the crop demonstration project, 6) conduct of farmers seminars, 7) organizing cooperatives, 8) participation of existing institution to answer improvement of people's social consciousness, and 9) evaluation of present system of government by allowing a free exercise of the democratic rights of the people.
