Abstract

The practicum was conducted at the Yakal Farm. Lipa City, Batangas from June 1997-September, 1998. The farm adopted the recommended technologies for black pepper production and postproduction as well as soil fertility management practices These contributed to the production of high quality whole black pepper.

The average yield of the farm in 1998 was 1.04 tons of dry whole black pepper per hectare, 29% lower than the average yield of 1.46 tons in 1996. This can be attributed to the El Nino phenomenon.

Benefit cost analysis showed that the total production cost per hectare was P61,548.00 while the gross income and gross margin at P 220.00 per kg were P229,888.00 and P168,340.00 per hectare respectively. The cost to produce one kilo of whole pepper was P58.90. Labor cost contributed half of the total cost and irrigation operation was the most expensive item of cost.

Spraying 20 ppm 2, 4-D solution to the vines with about to bloom and blooming flowers twice at weekly interval did not reduce spike abscission but delayed in attaining the peak abscission time.
