Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the Asian Development Bank, Mandaluyong City, from the summer of 2008 to the first semester of the school year 2008-2009. The objective of the major practice is for the student to gain knowledge and experience in the landscape activities through observation and direct participation in the maintenance operations for indoor plants focusing on the different lighting systems inside the building.

The evaluation of the lighting system was focused on five major areas that included the hallways, cafeteria, library, auditorium and workstations where most of the indoor plants are located. The student used a digital light meter to measure and records the light intensity for each location. An assessment between the actual light meter reading for each area and the recommended light intensity for the maintenance of each indoor plant present on each area was made.

The amount of light inside the building was found to be not sufficient to meet the needs of the plants to maintain a good growth. The quantity of natural light entering the building is affected by obstructions like trees on the outside. The placement of a plant inside the building affects the plants' interception of light from the natural and artificial sources. Recommendations were given to minimize or eliminate the problems that were encountered during the conduct of the major practice.
