Abstract

A diagnosis of college students' difficulties in differentiation that emphasized on differentiation of transcendental functions was presented. A diagnostic test was constructed and administered to a class section of Math 37. All papers with incorrect solutions were used to identify the students difficulties in differentiation and the error patterns -the erroneous computational procedure committed by ten or more students- in differentiating functions/equations. Possible causes of difficulties based on the identified error patterns were determined. These were used to arrive at a recommended remediation to help the teachers realize the importance of diagnostic testing and the students to achieve better conceptions in differentiation, and to lessen the probability of the occurance of the same problems in the near future.
