Abstract

A low-cost light-duty gate operator with automatic lock was designed and constructed using an AT90S2313 microcontroller. The device was divided into two major parts; the electronic part which is tasked to direct and monitor the entire operation of the system, and the mechanical part which responsible for gate and bolt lock actuations. The device is activated by a push button switch and could be stop immediately by an emergency stop button. The twelve-volt motor was used as the bolt actuator and was monitored by two phototransistors with the use of infrared LED as status indicator, while the twenty four-volt motor was utilized as the gate actuator and was monitored by two magnetic read relay limiting switches activated by magnets strategically placed such that the gate close status switch would activate when the bolt lock is directly on top of the hole on the ground for locking. An SRF04 ultrasonic ranging sensor was used to detect obstruction while the gate is opening and a warning buzzer is activated while closing. If an obstruction is six to seven inches away from the gate, the microcontroller would instruct the actuator to reverse its direction and close the gate. Requiring a hole for locking, the device was tested on a swing gate located at the machine shop where effectiveness and limitations of the actuations and obstruction sensing were studied respectively. Once the magnetic reed relay limiting switches were placed correctly, the swinging and locking processes worked competently. The average opening for a 90° swing is one minute and six seconds including the unlocking process, while the average closing time is one minute and seventeen seconds including the locking process. To improve peripheral obstruction detection, the sensor was tilted 45° toward the gate post and its range sensitivity was increased to 12 inches. Added features include auto close gate after 30 seconds and gate direction reverse switch. The production cost of the operator was computed and found to be less than PhP5000 compared to a similar commercially available gate operator that costs beyond PhP20000.
