Abstract
A Powerline Communication (PLC) system was developed tier data transmission. PLC is a rising technology from different countries. It is a communication system that uses existing power grid lines to transmit the data. It is used in many applications like broadband connections and automated meter reading. In the Philippines. PLC can hardly be noticed in the technology market. The PLC system developed consists of four modules; a serial interface, FSK module, the HCPL-800J Interface and a coupling circuit. Concepts utilized are phase-locked loop (PLL), frequency shift keying (FSK), optocoupling and AC coupling. A sinusoidal signal was superimposed to the Powerline signal and then filtered by the receiver. The system was then tested and characterized using different parameters like distance, drift and resistance to external hazards. The developed PLC system was tested to transmit a certain signal at 10% accuracy. It also showed an effective transmission range of 50 meters (radius) and resistance to external noise generators. External noise generators included the tests using switching power supplies and RF generating devices. The system also showed insignificant change in transmission capabilities through time. The developed PLC system can be used in many applications like automated meter reading and other automation of remote devices. Though it has some disadvantages and limitations, the PLC system can be used as a communication system.
