Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted in Cuenca, Batangas at four different sites, mainly Endaya Farm at As-is, Brgy. San Felipe, Mrs. Arroyo-Aguila homelot at Brgy 3. Poblacion, Endaya Farm at Anubing, Brgy. 7, and Mrs. Antonio's homelot at Brgy. 7. The total number of trees used were 89, 2 and 47 and 1, respectively on each site. The trees were divided into sets that were induced on different dates. The whole operation starts at the flower induction of the first set of trees which was done in January 14, 2001 and ends at harvesting of mangoes at Mrs. Aguila's homelot and Mrs. Antonio's homelot in May 17, 2001. The student observed, recorded and participated in some of the operations involved in flower induction and fruit production of mango.

Farm operations conducted were flower induction, pest management and harvesting of mango. A 1% solution of technical grade KNO3 was used in the flower induction and a good flowering response of 80-90% was observed in all areas except in Anubing which has 60-70%. Pesticides such as Malathion, Chess, Benlate, Dithane, Baythroid and Decis were used in pest management, where a total of four pesticide spraying was done at a weekly interval. Due to heavy rains and fog, both farm was infected with anthracnose sparing only the trees at Mrs. Aguila's and Mrs. Antonio's homelot. A total of 89 bamboo baskets "kaings" were harvested from both areas and the benefit-cost analysis of the flower induction and fruit production of mango were computed. Problems encountered in the practice were analyzed and given recommendations. Also a SWOT analysis of the practice was developed to give suggestions to the problems encountered in the major farm practice.
