Abstract
The microcomputer-based high temperature controller system is not intended to compete with the commercially available high temperature controllers. It's main purpose is to implement a microcomputer based temperature controller system using the presently available materials in the laboratory. The microcomputer has the advantages of speed, storage, programmability and on-line decision making capabilities over other controller systems. These characteristics of the microcomputer makes it very attractive to use in temperature monitoring and control applications. The system made use of the type K thermocouple as the temperature sensor. The microcomputer used has an 80286 microprocessor, 64 Kilobytes of memory and a 1.44 Megabytes, 3.5 inch disk drive for booting the system and for running and testing the softwares developed. The Personal Computer Analog-to-Digital Converter ( PCADC 12 ) card commercially manufactured by INNOVATRONIX Inc., was also incorporated in the system. A variac and a Kanthalux wire resistive heater was used as the heating element of the system. Temperature was controlled in between a lower temperature limit and a higher temperature limit , which are both user defined. The system implements the on/off method of changing temperature. This method controls the power supplied to the resistive heater, by virtually making an open circuit circuit when the input signal to the actuator is logic 0 ( LOW ) and completing the circuit when the input signal to the actuator is logic 1 ( HIGH ). The system requires an external 110 volts alternating current power supply to power up the the variac which facilitates the power source of the Kanthalux wire resistive heater. The temperature range limitation of the system is from room temperature to 460°C.
