Abstract

This study investigated the compressive strength of Type I cement mortars using S-1 sand and white sand as primary fine aggregates. Compressive strength has become universally accepted as the most important indication of concrete quality. In this study, the key properties which affect compressive are specific gravity and fineness modulus. Common factors affecting strength of cement mortars include water-to-cement ratio, sand-to-cement ratio and curing period. However, in this study, these factors were fixed to 0.5w/c ratio, 3.0slc ratio, and 7 days curing period. Results show hat S-1 sand produces mortar with higher compressive strength as compared to white sand which can be attributed to the specific gravity and the degree of fineness of the aggregates.
