Abstract

LUNGAY, ROSEMARIE ALDAY. College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, University of the Philippines Los Banos. April 2013. Analysis of the Level of Service of the Lopez Avenue-National Highway Intersection in Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines.

This study presents an analysis of the level of service (LOS) of the Lopez Avenue-National Highway intersection under different types of control. It aimed to quantify the delay experienced by the users of the mentioned route. After determining the LOS of the intersection under different types of control and establishing which type of control gives the minimum delay, the optimal signal phasing routine was ascertained. The volume of vehicles obtained on a traffic count that was done manually during the anticipated peak hour period was used for the analysis using a trial edition of Synchro. Synchro is a software for modeling and optimizing traffic signal timings. The results show that using any type of control, the LOS of the intersection is F which means that the control delay is more than 80 seconds per vehicle for signalized intersection and is more than 50 seconds per vehicle for unsignalized intersection. However, the signalized intersection gave the minimum intersection delay. Then, optimizing the result of signalized intersection using the the optimization feature of the software, the LOS is still F. Though, the intersection delay decreases. On the other hand, considering no tricycle volume in the intersection the LOS of the intersection is still F. But, the approach LOS has improved. Additional analysis like considering a network of intersections can further made to improve this study.
