Abstract
The effects on the behavior of the total time of percolation by the implementation of a one-time step spread modification in a square matrix were studied using a constructed C program. This modification involves a perturbation of the direction or halting of percolation. Seven different kinds of modification namely Northeast. Northwest, East, West, Southeast, Southwest, and Halting were implemented in this study and applied to different lattice sizes. These are 10x10, 50x50, 100x100, 500x500, and 1000x1000 square lattice. Modifications were introduced in three different locations specifically at the quarter, half, and three-quarters mark of the matrix. Among the sizes used in the experiment, the 10x10 lattice features the largest manifestation of change from the regular approach of percolation. On the other hand, the largest lattice used which is 1000x1000 lattice gave the least deviation from the regular approach of percolation. The area that is closest to the source of the percolating material was the first to deviate from the regular approach regardless of the size and the type of modification implemented. On the other hand the area that is farthest from the source is the last to exhibit change. With the implementation of the modification, five different behaviors were listed and each has reasons for its existence. The modification was also responsible for either early or delayed termination of the spread of the percolating materials.
