Abstract

Polyaniline emeraldine base (PAni-EB) was prepared and dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). The soluble PAni-EB was mixed into enamel paint with 1:5 wt.%. The PAni-EB and enamel paint mixture was painted into cold rolled steel panels using a doctor blade. Enamel paint was also coated on cold rolled steel panels for comparison purposes. The different test panels were immersed in 5%, 10%, and 15% concentrated HCl under 30, 36, and 42 hours. The chemical structure of polyaniline emeraldine form was verified using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Surface morphology using optical microscope showed the difference of the treated and untreated panels before and after acid immersion. Rusting was observed on the surface of the untreated panels while blistering and chalking were exhibited on the treated coating after exposure to acidic solution. The treated panels (w/ PAni) and untreated panels (w/o PAni) were characterized using Paint Film Sensor which measured the resistance of the paint film before and after treatment. It was confirmed that the resistance of the treated panels is higher than that of the untreated panels.
