Abstract

With the increasing waste generation and disposal problems faced by countries, communities must be responsible in adhering to proper solid waste management practices and refrain from improper disposals such as burning wastes and open dumping in land and water bodies. Employing a Contingent Valuation Method (CVM), this paper determines the valuation for a solid waste management collection service in Brgy, San Jose, Rosario, Batangas following a random distribution of the survey questionnaire among 232 household heads. With the use of logistic regression analysis, three variables were found to be statistically significant in affecting households' WTP for a SWM collection service--bid amount, sex, and distance to the nearest paved road. These variables share a negative effect on WTP.

Further, using the Turnbull estimator, households' willingness to pay for a solid waste management collection service in the community is elicited to be equal to Php 53.57 based on the treated data. This amount will be collected monthly from households in the community for the next 5 years through a garbage collection fee. From this value, the community can generate an estimated annual garbage collection revenue equivalent to Php 328,808.35, which covers almost 21 % of the program's cost. This coverage will significantly help fund the program's implementation; hence, should be considered by the LGU of the community.
