Abstract

This paper systematically analyzes the economic valuation studies on protected forest areas in Southeast Asia through a meta-analysis. The online literature search on the economic valuation of ecosystem services from protected forest studies from 1990-2022 produced 32 relevant studies with 95 ecosystem services values. These values are standardized in annual US$ per hectare in 2017 prices. Using an OLS regression, results showed that forest area, nature reserve, national park, and protected landscape PA classifications, provisioning services, regulating services, and the use of revealed and stated preferences methodology are statistically significant factors affecting the annual per hectare values of ecosystem services (ES) from forest PAs. It was also shown that there is a diminishing marginal return on forest areas. Protected landscape, national park, and protected area with sustainable use PA categories provide higher economic values than unprotected forests, while nature reserve and forest protection have lower values relative to unprotected forests. In terms of ecosystem service categories, the provisioning and regulating services provide higher values than cultural services. On the other hand, both revealed and stated preference methods provide lower ES values than the benefits transfer method. The study also attempted to discuss study limitations and information gaps in protected forest studies in Southeast Asia. A notable geographical bias was seen in the available online studies, in that the more represented countries were biodiversity hotspots, had more number of protected areas, and more financing for natural resource research.
