Abstract

This study aims to identify the economics behind community pantries that are well- known endeavor in the Philippines during the pandemic through the use of literature review survey which consists of studies, articles, news, and other published works that can be attributed to the establishment and operation of the community pantries in the country. All the economic concepts that can be related to the pantries, may it be from macroeconomics, microeconomics, welfare economics, or behavioral economics are considered in the writing of the whole study.

This study also attempts to explain how and why economics can and should be related to the said community initiative that was started in hopes of addressing the hunger incidence concerns in the country during the pandemic. The economic issues and problems that the pandemic brought such as unemployment and inflation caused the worsening of the living standards in the Philippines. And Filipinos struggled to make ends meet and avail their daily needs, especially food. These problems triggered the spirit of bayanihan of the Filipinos and started establishing community pantries all over the country, wherein people who are struggling can get their needs and those who are capable can donate their resources.

These food banks cater to everyone with the essential reminder to get what they need and give what they can. The community pantries started because of the economic issues that the pandemic exploited, and there are a lot of economic concepts that can be related to its establishment and operation which is why considering and viewing it as an economic phenomenon can make the owners handle it better and make people understand its economic value and impact.
