Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the Philippine economy, causing a decline in the welfare of Filipino households. This decrease in welfare is represented by the households' lower income and consumption and, ultimately, their savings.

The objective of this study was to understand how COVID-19 hospitalization affects household savings in Barangay Sampaloc IV, Dasmarinas City, Cavite. Moreover, the study also determined the factors that affect household savings. The Tobit model was utilized in this study, given the nature of the data of the dependent variable. The results of the Tobit regression and the conditional marginal effects for both the censored and truncated sample revealed that the disposable income, income loss due to labor days loss caused by COVID-19, and the age and sex of the household head significantly affect the savings of households in Barangay Sampaloc IV.

The households were also divided into two groups to compare their savings and COVID-19 expenditures. The comparison showed that the households that were never infected with COVID-19 saved a higher percentage of their income compared to the households that were infected with COVID-19 because they incurred lower COVID-19- related expenditures and zero income loss.
