Abstract

The research attempts to understand the situation and opportunities given to women in a male-dominant workplace. The study seeks to investigate how policewomen allocate their time on non-market activities and the factors that affect their time used decision, it also aims to analyze the relation between rank and non market time of policewomen. The Ordinary Least Square method was used to determine which factors affect how police women spend their in-home non market activities. The Southern Police District were heavily dominated by policemen. Similarly, there were only few police women assigned to clerical or desk job and a large number of policewomen have partners who were responsible for household work. The findings reveal that lower non-commissioned officers were given more market time and spend less time on non-market activities than upper non-commissioned officers and commissioned officers. Findings also showed that lower non-commissioned officers were mostly assigned to unit assignment as compared to upper ranks therefore, affecting the time they have for non market activities. Despite their time was demanded in the workplace, they will be satisfied with their non market time use. However, their non-market time shows an increasing trend as ranking increases therefore, lower ranks were less satisfied with their nin market time allocation. It was notable that policewomen allocate mostly their time on in home than out home activities. The findings suggest that married police women would increase their time spent in home activities meanwhile, out home non market activities decreases. On the other hand, an increased market time has a negative effect on in-home/out-home non-market activity.
