Abstract

This study determined the various effects of COVID-19 pandemic on the employment in the airline industry. To do so, various literature on the effects of the pandemic were gathered, organized, and synthesized. Anecdotal evidence was also gathered to support the findings of these literature. In addition, the literature review conducted investigated the different infectious diseases that have affected the air transportation sector and its employment. Many of the literature cited in this study were conducted in foreign countries, while others covered Asian countries, including South Korea and the Philippines. the study found that job loss comes in different forms, especially the uncertainty shock like the COVID-19 pandemic. In the case of the Philippine airline industry, it found that COVID-19 had differential impacts on employment in the industry. Specifically, it found that job loss wad evident in terms of reduced wages and working hours. Parallel results were also seen in the infectious diseases discussed, which can be attributed to the mobility restrictions and the ability of the air transport sector to spread diseases rapidly.
