Abstract
A microcontroller-based instrument for measurement of magnetic susceptibility was designed and tested. The system used Mutual Inductance Bridge (MIB) as the sensor. The MIB was designed as a three-coil system - one primary and two secondary coils. The change in voltage upon placement of the sample in one of the two secondary coils was monitored and read by the ADC of a microcontroller. The ZiLOG Z81:6401 microcontroller was used to receive and display data in the LCD. It was used to transmit data to the PC through Universal Asynchronous Receiver/ Transmitter (DART). This was done using Visual Basic user interface. The system was then tested and obtained precise readings. For samples that are paramagnetic the voltage reading increases and therefore gives positive value. However on materials that are known to be diamagnetic, the voltage reading resulted into negative value. The instrument was tested for the increasing volume of aluminum samples and it was observed that the voltages obtained which are proportional to susceptibility were also increasing.
