Abstract
Films of emeraldine base polyaniline were cast from a dispersion of emeraldine base powder in 1 — methyl — 2 — pyrrolidinone (NMP). Tracks of polyaniline doped with selected acids were formed on the films using surface application of acid through a mask. FT-IR spectroscopy of the emeraldine base powder was performed to confirm its identity. Reflectance spectroscopy confirmed the shift in the color of the polymer film from purple to blue when doped. The morphology of the films was studied using a scanning electron microscope, revealing a smooth and relatively featureless surface. Electrical tests of the tracks of doped polyaniline showed that current flows through the tracks, and that current does not flow between adjacent tracks. Conductivity measurements revealed low conductivities of the doped polyaniline, which may be caused by insufficient penetration of dopant ions into the film. The tracks created were conducting in the sense that current flow through them was detected. However, the low conductivities determined suggest that they are not yet feasible to be used as conducting elements in electronic circuits.
