Abstract
The genetic diversity of 104 blast-, bacterial blight-, and tungro-resistant breeding lines selected from annual reports by the International Network for Genetic Evaluation of Rice (INGER) was assessed using 50 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. three hundred twelve alleles were detected with an average of 6.24 alleles per locus. Polymorphism information content (PIC) ranged from 0.29 to 0.89. The Dice coefficients of similarity of the 104 breeding lines were utilized for clustering analysis, which showed six groups at 0.38 level of similarity. Origin and percentage largely influenced the groupings of the breeding lines based on the dendogram. Furthermore, results showed that three was high variability among the selected breeding lines as these breeding lines began to diverge at 0.23 coefficient of similarity. This knowledge of genetic diversity could facilitate crop improvement by aiding in the planning of crosses that would ensure a broad genetic base and even hybrid vigor.
