Abstract
Karyotype analysis of three accessions of abaca, Musa textilis Nee (Zingeberales : Musaceae) namely 6390, 6407 and a new one were done using the acetocarmine squash technique on root tip cells to confirm the chromosome number of the species, and compare the karyotype of the three accessions. Majority of the cells contained a somatic chromosome number of 2n=20, although 25% of the cells in Accession 6407 had 2n=17; in Accession 6390, 20% had 2n=21 and in the new accession, 20% had 2n=18. This confirmed the earlier findings that abaca exhibit somatic mosaicism. Relative length values of the chromosome complements revealed variability among the accessions used. Similarly, the average mitotic indices among accessions were significantly different.
