Abstract
To test the cytogenic effects of aqueous seed extract on human leukocytes in vitro, 2 to 3 ml of blood from five male donors of ages 20 to 22 were incubated at 37OC for 48 hours. They were treated with four preparations of different concentrations of aqueous mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) weed extract (0% control). 1% 3% and 5%) and cultured again for another 24 hours after which the cells were harvested and observed. Results indicate significant difference exists between the mitotic index of the control (0%) and the treatment groups Mean mitotic indices of 0 115, 0 095, 0.074 and 0.043 were observed in the control, 1%, 3%, and 5°O respectively Points of difference from the control were detected to he from the 3% and 5(!,6 treatment groups. For chromosomal aberrations, the occurrence of gaps, breaks, and loose sister chromatids were considered statistically insignificant at cc — 0 05 However, the number of cells with condensed chromosomes were considered significant ( 0164 (0%), 0.560 (1%), 0.66 (3%) and 0.784 (5%) ). Data showed that the aqueous mahogany seed extracts are not capable of inducing chromosomal breaks, gaps, and loose sister chromatids in cultured human leukocytes. However, the insignificant decrease in the mitotic index and increase in condensed chromosomes may have implications on normal cell functions
