Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the coffee supply of the Philippines. Using graphs and trend lines, results of this study showed that coffee importation, number of coffee bearing trees, area planted, farm gate prices of coffee, retail prices of inorganic fertilizers, temperature, and rainfall are in an increasing trend. While coffee production is in a decreasing trend.
Also, this study used Multiple Linear Regression to determine the statistically significant factors that affect the supply of Excelsa and Robusta coffee. The study found that the number of bearing Excelsa coffee trees and farm gate price of Excelsa coffee are statistically significant factors that affect the supply of Excelsa coffee. While the number of bearing Robusta coffee trees and the retail price of Ammonium Phosphate are statistically significant factors that affect the supply of Robusta coffee. Moreover, the results of Multiple Linear Regression also showed that the number of bearing Excelsa coffee trees, lagged farm gate price of Excelsa coffee, and rainfall showed a positive relationship with the supply of Excelsa coffee. Whereas, the farm gate price of Excelsa coffee, the retail price of Urea, and temperature showed a negative relationship. While, the number of bearing Robusta coffee trees, lagged and farm gate price of Robusta coffee, and retail price of Ammonium Phosphate showed a positive relationship with the supply of Robusta coffee. Whereas, temperature and rainfall exhibited a negative Relationship.
This study concludes that to increase the supply of coffee in the Philippines, the productivity of the coffee trees must be improved and the negative effects of climate change must be mitigated. Improvement of coffee tree productivity can be done through improved management practices of the coffee trees by doing regular pruning and increased fertilization of trees. While the negative effects of climate change can be mitigated by intercropping coffee with banana trees.
