Abstract

Three treatment groups of Makabuhay stem extract: control, 10% and 20% Makabuhay stem extract, were evaluated for their effects on adult mice of both sexes. Five males and five females were assigned per treatment group. For five days, 0.5 ml of Makabuhay stem extract was force-fed to the mice. Analysis showed that the plant material caused significant changes in the weights of the ovary and testis. Pockets of lymphocytes were observed in the liver of the 10 and 20% treated mice. This observation clearly suggests that Makabuhay at the higher level of treatments can cause infection in the liver. Absence of matured follicles was also observed in the ovary of the 10 and 20% treated animals. An effect of the high level of treatments on the ovary appeared to be follicular atresia. The kidneys of the treated animals were not so such affected.
