Abstract
Algal assays were conducted on three natural lake waters, namely, Laguna de Bay, Lake Buhi, and Lake Catugday to: (1) determine if algal growth was consistent with results of chemical analyses of water samples for orthophosphate and soluble inorganic nitrogen; (2) determine if algal yields were limited by 2, N, or some other nutrient essential for algal growth; and (3) predict line effects of N or P additions on algal growth. Two of the three natural lake waters were primarily limited by nitrogen and secondarily by phosphorus. Lake Catugday was secondarily limited by nutrients other than P, at the time of the assay. Addition of nitrogen in all cases stimulated algal growth but addition of phosphorus did not. However, addition of the two together, stimulated algal growth to a greater extent than did the addition of nitrogen alone.
