Abstract
The Orchard Golf and Country Club (The Orchard) consist of two championship courses (Palmer and Player Course) with 18 holes each. The Orchard utilizes the newest turfgrass species in its Player course the Sea Isle 2000 (Paspalum vaginatum Swarz). It has high salt tolerace and is a top-performing seashore paspalum cultivar that is suitable for greens and can tolerate a mowing height of less than four millimeters. To achieve desirable turf quality, The Orchard employs different levels of maintenance depending on the different turf areas. During the major practice (April 2012 ? May 2012), different turfgrass maintenance practices in The Orchard were performed, observed and evaluated. The Orchard has a complete set of mowers suitable for different mowing requirements of a golf course. Required mowing height and mowing frequency are strictly followed in the site. In terms of nutrient management, the focus was on the Palmer and Player greens. On top of other required fertilizers, the Player greens where the Sea Isle 2000 was planted were applied with FeSO4 (0.8 g/m2) to provide a quick green-up without promoting growth surge. One major problem in the site was the broken irrigation parts and fittings resulting to unattractive brown turf in some areas. Weeds like crabgrass (Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koeler) and mouse-ear chickweed (Cerastium fontanum Baumg) were also a major problem. Other maintenance practices, problems and possible recommendations are discussed in the manuscript. In maintaining a good turf like in The Palmer Course, it requires an annual estimated cost of Php 46, 458, 752.25 (Php 1, 366.43/ m2). The student learned that maintaining a good quality golf course entails skills, knowledge and budget.
