Abstract
ABSTRACT ANDAL, LUCY MAGHIRANG, 1982. "Further S4udies on the In Vitro Culturing of Human White Blood Cells in Coconut Water Media". An undergraduate thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology, under the advisorship of Dr. William G. Padolina, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, First Semester, 1982.
Human white blood cells were cultured in vitro at 37°C using coconut water and RPMI 1640 as media, both supplemented with serum and antibiotics. Extracted from six-month old drupes, the coconut water-serum antibiotic supplemented medium has a percent viability significantly lower than that of RPMI 1640-serum -=127.cnted medium, using the trypan blue dye-exclusion test as viability index. With prolonged period of culturing, a decrease in percent viability was observed. Replacement of medium significantly increases percent viability. Results indicated that coconut water, although able to maintain leucocytes for a ten day period, is less efficient as a culture medium compared to RPMI 1640.
