Abstract

The meiotic index of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don. was 88.96%. Its chromosome number was 2n=16. Abnormalities which were seen during Metaphase I and Anaphase I include laggards, non-congression of bivalents, early and late disjunctions of bivalents. Telophase I and Meiosis II were observed to be normal. Analyses of monocentric pachytene chromosomes showed 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8 were metacentric while chromosomes 4, 5 and 6 were submetacentric. their relative mean lengths ranged from 108.62 to 189.80. The high frequency of bivalent formation during diakinesis and the normal chromosome behavior during the later meiotic stages favored the production of fertile gametes in C. roseus. Its pollen fertility rnged from 88.9% to 96.7% .
