Abstract
The lectin activity of the indigenous food legume seeds was determined by the hemagglutination assay. All of the indigenous food legume seeds, with the exception of rice-bean (Vigna umbellata) accessions 28 and 46, caused agglutination of the rabbit erythrocytes. Undiluted extracts of the lectin-containing seeds were tested for immunological relationships by the double diffusion test. Three different types of anti-lectin sera were allowed to react against the undiluted extracts. Reactions of identity were observed between the undiluted jackbean (Acc. Nos. 8-6, 44 and 45) and swordbean Nos. 8-4 and 8-9) extracts developed against the anti lectin. Reactions of identity (between Acc. Nos. b9 and 93) and partial identity (between Acc. Nos. 60 and 69) were observed in kidney bean cultivars extracts developed against the anti-kidney bean lectin. A precipitin line developed between the lima bean extract and the anti-kidney bean lectin. The precipitin lines that formed between the soybean extracts and the anti-soybean lectin were broad and diffuse.
