Abstract

Organic compound which strongly inhibit the germination of pechay seeds (Brassica pekinensis) abound in the leaves of chromolaena odorata. Some of these allelochemicals are volatile while, others to be effective against other plants, would have to be released through long hours of leaching (12-24 hours) or by total decomposition of the tissues. Inhibitions of germination and the delayed root elongation is attributed to the almost cessation of mitotic cell division in the treated roots. The slight elongation of the roots. could be due to the abnormal elongation of the treated cells. The allelochemicals also induced leakness of the membrane.
