Abstract

Ten F1 hybrids between two upland and three lowland varieties of rice were analyzed and compared with the parents in terms of their cytogenetic behavior at meiosis. Pairing of the chromosomes at pachynoma in the parental varieties observed was essentially normal, while a higher degree of "loose pairing was found in the hybrid population. In the other meiotic stages, no significant differences in chromosome behavior of the parents and hybrids were exhibited; abnormalities shown by the hybrids were similarly found in the parents. At diakinesis and metaphase, univalents and quadrivalents were commonly observed. Bridges and laggards occurred at a low frequency during the anaphase and telophese stages. Other aberrations at very low frequencies have also been observed.
