Abstract

A survey was conducted among records of admission in six hospitals in Lucena City, San Pablo City, and Sta. Cruz to determine the frequency of muscular dystrophy and its mode of transmission among the familial cases noted. A total of 70,831 patients, representing 18% of the total population for the three areas were included in the study. Among 70,831 patients two have Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and one has progressive muscular dystrophy (PMD). The only case with family history for the disease was that of a three-year old boy with l)MD whose pattern of transmission fits the established X--linked recessive mode of inheritance for the disorder. Chi-square test showed that the population follows the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for PPID but not for PMD.
