Abstract
The effect of the varying phosphorus concentration on the doubling time, heterocyst index and sporulation in four strains of Azolla was studied. Each of the four Azolla strains, Azolla LanaLa (5 and 704), Azolla mexicana (202) and Azolla caroliniana (306) were grown in Yoshida culture solution with the following phosphorus concentrations(0 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm, and 40 ppm) introduced to it. To induce sporulation, the Azolla strains were then transferred and stored in a temperature chamber with a maintained temperature of 20°C at day and 15°C at night having light intensity for 11 hours and 13 hours darkness a day. Doubling time was obtained twice, after 5 days and 10 days of culture. Heterocyst index count and sporulation were obtained with the aid of a light microscope and a dissecting microscope respectively. The study showed that the varying phosphorus concentration has significant effect on the doubling time of four Azolla strains based on a statistical analysis of 5% probability level. Phosphorus being the most important macronutrient for growth and nitrogen fixation has also a significant effect on the heterocyst
