Abstract

Two species of Swietenia are found in our locality : Swietenia macrophylla King and Swietenia mahogani Jacq. Their differences were noted such as the size of their leaves, the type of tree they exhibit and the arrangement of their tissues. The leaves of both species were studied histochemically to determine the major constituents that would contribute to their pharmacological value. The seed of S. macrophylla was also subjected to the same tests. Results showed that both leaves were positive for alkaloid, glycosides, saponin, tannin and sulfur. Localization were noted on the leaves' epidermis, mesophyll, cortex, phloem and xylem. Sites of accumulation shows the result of translocation from active tissues of the tree. The seed was also positive for alkaloid but of a lesser concentration compared to the leaves. Results also showed that, mahogany indeed could have pharmacological value.
