Abstract
A survey on the incidence of cancer was conducted in 135 out of 371(36.38%) households of Tabangao Aplaya, an industrial area and in 87 out of 260 households (33.46%) of Alangilan, a residential area in Batangas City to characterize the features of cancer in the two areas. A total of 10 cancer cases or 0.92% was noted in both areas from 1991-2000. The frequency of cancer in Tabangao Aplaya was calculated at 0.0103. Seven out of ten of the cases occurred in males, however, no correlation was found between sex and increased cancer risk. The highest proportion (4.38%) of cancer cases was present among individuals of ages 46-60 years old. Lung cancer had the highest frequency of occurrence (0.28%), followed by blood cancer (leukemia) (0.18%) and brain cancer (0.18%). Cancers of the breast, liver and pancreas had a frequency of 0.09%. A 2:5 ratio of familial to sporadic cancer cases in Tabangao Aplaya was not significantly different to a 2:1 ratio obtained for Alangilan. Familial cases of breast cancer, leukemia and lung cancer showed a possible autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. A test of proportion showed that occupational exposure and smoking were found to be significantly correlated to cancer in the industrial area while dietary lifestyle (more than seven times meat intake and less than three times vegetable consumption per week) proved to be associated with cancer in Alangilan (residential area).
