Abstract

This research was conducted to study the cytogenetics of the hybrids. Determination and comparison of chromosome number and meiotic behaviors were performed in UPLB Hybrid 1, its backcross with Azolla mexicana strain 202, and Azolla mexicana strain 202 itself. Cytogenetic analysis showed that chromosome mosaicism occurred in all the plant materials. However, the F1 showed a wider range of chromosomal variation. High bivalent formation in the F1 and the backcross indicated high degree of chromosomal homology. But, the presence of some meiotic irregularities was still suggestive of the presence of cryptic chromosomal differences. Reduced chromosome number was observed in the backcross. Several meiotic abnormalities were noted. There was non-congression and lagging of chromosomes at metaphases 1 and II . Laggards were observed up to anaphase I and telophase I. The presence of bridge formation at anaphase I of the F1 was noted. In contrast to the hybrids. Azolla mexicana strain 202 was generally normal in meiotic behavior.
