Abstract
The chromosome number and morphology of male Calamian deer (Axis calamianensis) were studied. Blood samples were used as the source of chromosomes. Well spread metaphase cells were used for karyotypic analysis. The centromeric position of the chromosomes were designated following the method of classification suggested by Levan (1964). The results herein suggest that the diploid chromosome number of Axis calamianensis is 68, the constitution of which is 66AA XY. The karyotype can be grouped into 4 based on centromere position. Two pairs have median centromeres, 10 pairs have sub7edian centromere, 8 pairs have terminal centromeres and 13 pairs have subterminal centromeres. A chromosome with subterminal centromere has a satellite and in considered as having the nucleolar organizing region. The X chromosome has a submedian centromere while the Y chromosome has a terminal centromere. Calamian deer has a karyotype different for that of other deers with known karyotype.
