Abstract

Mangifera creesia L. extract was introduced to root tip cells of Allium cepa L. in increasing concentration 0f0.025% and 0.5% and 6,24 and 48 hr. The extract exhibited strong antimitotic effect. All treatments revealed a significant decrease in the mitotic index. Mitotic inhibition and cellular abnormalities became more pronounced as the treatment time was prolonged and concentration increased. Most prominent abnormal condition was the distributed of metaphase, the colchicine-like effect on the C-metaphase. Some cells with 2n=32 were also observed. These phenomena were attributed to the inhibition of the normal function of the spindle mechanism. The ability of the Allium cepa root tip cells to be recover from the inhibitory effects of Mangifera caesia extract was concentration dependent. Other abnormalities observed were sticky metaphase and anaphase and lagging and surpassing chromosomes.
