Abstract
The phytoplankton species and their vertical distribution were determined in upper water column of Lake Pandin (surface depth, Secchi depth, below Secchi depth) within a 24-hour observation period during the rainy month of December. There were about 20 species of phytoplankton encountered representing five algal classes (Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Xanthophyceae and Dinophyceae), 11 orders and 15 families. Most of the species belonged to class Chlorophyceae. Algal species found to distribute themselves at different depths during the 24-hour observation period were: Chamaesiphon, Microcystis, Amphora, Fragilaria, Gomphonema, Aulacoseira, Botryococcus, Ceratium, Gloeocystis, Sphaerocystis, Nephrocystis, Oocystis, four species of Pediastrum, Spirogyra, Staurastrum and Volvox. Majority of the phytoplankton were confined in the upper 1-m and 2.3-m depths only based on density and species richness. During the 1600 h sampling, there were 12 species identified all of which had low densities. Fifteen species were observed during the 2200 h sampling with five species evidently became dominant. During the 400 h sampling, 14 species were found, five of which became populous. Fifteen species were identified during the 1000 h sampling, of which seven had high populations within the entire depths of the water column. The change in the species composition in the water column of Lake Pandin was affected by many factors like physical turbulence in the water column, morphological structures/adaptations of the cells and predation by zooplankton.
