Abstract

Two species of forest ground frogs, Platymantis (Anura:Ranidae), P. dorsalis and P. mimulus collected from Flatrocks, Mount Makiling, Los Banos, Laguna were characterized morphologically using the standard mensural characters and cytologically using meiotic cells from the testes. Based on general morphological characters, the two species are very similar. They are significantly different in snout to vent length (28.61 ± 2.54; 20.98 ± 4.64), eye diameter (3.81 ± 0.31; 2.69 ± 0.56), head width (10.58 ± 0.67; 9.33 ± 0.98), and tibia length (15.23 ± 0.74; 12.59 ± 2.11mm). P. dorsalis and P. mimulus are diploid species with 2n=20 and 2n=19 chromosome numbers, respectively. Although, bridge (8.77%) from P. dorsalis and 3.57% from P. mimulus and laggards (4.39%) were observed in P. dorsalis, Meiosis I in the two species were generally normal.
