Abstract
The effects of the crude seed extracts from Strychnos nux-vomica Linn., at two concentrations (0.002 g/kg rat wt and 0.005 g /kg) and exposure durations (1, 4, 7, and 14 days) on the meiotic index and pachytene chromosomes of Rattus rattus mindanensis Mearns were evaluated. Fifty male rats were treated individually with strychnine extracts dissolved in one milliliter of distilled water using gavage method. Control rats were provided with pure distilled water. Analysis of testicular cells showed that both strychnine treatments caused increased meiotic activity and pachytene chromosome abnormalities such as loose-pairing. multiple-pairing, and non-pairing. Higher increase in pachytene chromosome abnormalities was observed at 0.005 g/kg rat wt compared with 0.002 g/kg rat wt. The increase in chromosomal abnormalities was detected at least a week after exposure to the alkaloid.
