Abstract

Chromosome number, meiotic behavior and pollen fertility of kakaw Theobroma cacao trees from Sikatuna Vill., Q.C., Raymundo Subd., Los Banos and Riverside, Los Banos were studied. The chromosome number was found to be 2n=20 for all cells observed. Abnormalities were abundant; laggards and non-congression in metaphase I and II, early disjunction was also seen in metaphase I; laggards in anaphase I and II. All cells at telophase I were normal but there was the presence of triads and dyads at telophase II aside from the normal tetrads. The pollen fertility is generally low (12.71%), which can be attributed to the presence of many abnormalities at meiosis.
