Abstract
Sampled populations of Asian corn borer, Ostrinia fiirnacalis (Guenee), from Bukidnon, Leyte, and South Cotabato were mass-reared at the Institute of Plant Breeding, UPLB. Ten adult males from each location were fixed in Carnoy's solution and stained with lacto-aceto orcein to reveal the meiotic cells and chromosomes. A lot of interphase cells were observed in the prepared slides. In terms of spermatocytes, Premetaphase I was the most prominent stage encountered. Early Anaphase I was the next frequently observed meiotic stage. The meiotic indices of the three populations of O. furnacalis were 38.59% for Bukidnon, 83.04% for Leyte and 72.16% for South Cotabato. Being a bisexual species, such meiotic indices suggest the variation in the reproductive potentials of the three populations of 0. furnacalis. Based on the behavior of the meiotic chromosomes, 0. firnacalis possesses holokinetic chromosomes. The Diakinesis chromosome numbers (n) of the three corn borer populations were different. The modal chromosomal numbers of Bukidnon population of O. furnacalis were n=10 and ti-13, those from Leyte were n=17; n=20 and ?V 24 and those from South Cotabato was n---31. The mean actual chromosome areas of O. fiffnacalis from Bukidnon ranged from 0.018 to 0.099 p.m2, those from Leyte ranged from 0.011 to 0.072 gm', and those from South Cotabato ranged from 0.013 to 0.072 ilm2. The mean relative chromosome areas of 0. furnacalis from Bukidnon ranged from 0.033 to 0.141, those from Leyte ranged from 0.024 to 0.108, and those from South Cotabato ranged from 0.012 to 0.069.
