Abstract

Chromosome number, morphology and behavior in mitosis in H. ciliate and H. crassicaulis and in meiosis in H. crassicaulis and H. obscura were investigated. Karyotypes of the prometaphase cells in H. ciliate and H. crassicaulis revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n=22. Normal mitotic behavior was also observed in both species. Mitotic index was slightly higher in H. crassicaulis (7.45%) as compared to H. ciliate (6.30%). The chromosomes were small, with relative lengths ranging from 0.028 to 0.065 in H. ciliate and 0.030 to 0.062 in H. crassicaulis. Chromosome type determination revealed that all chromosomes of H. dhow and H. crassicaulis are metacentric. Meiotic investigation on H. crassicaulis and H. obscure showed that both species exhibited 11 chromosome pairs at diakinesis suggesting a diploid chromosome number of 2n=22. No univalent formation, laggards and non-congressions were observed at meiosis I. Furthermore, it was also noted that the obtained mitotic and meiotic chromosome number of H. crassicaulis (2n=22) is the same.
