Abstract
The biological performance of three azolla namely; azolla UPLB79, A, mycrophylla and azolla UPLB-1 was studied in three experiments. Two of the experiments were performed to determine the effect of the levels of pH (pH 5 and pH 8) and four levels of phosphorus (0, 10, 20 and 40 ppm P) on doubling time, chlorophyll content, root length and number, heterocyst under, and color change, The third experiment was carried out to determine the resistance and susceptibility of the three fungal pathogens namelySclerotium sp. Rhizoctonia-like isolate 1 and Rhizotonia-Like isolate 8. than at pH5. The effect of pH on root number, chlorophyl content and heterocyst index interacted with azolla suggesting varying responses of pH on the three azolla.
Root number and root_ length significantly decreased at all levels of added phosphorus as compared with the 0--phosphorus treatment. heterocyst was significantly affected by increasing level of phosphorus up to 20 ppm P beyond which the heterocyst index was significantly affected No significant changes in chlorophyll content could be attributed to phosphoric level. For doubling time, the effect of ,,lo,,p1,Jrn., interacted with azolla indicating that the three azolla responded differently to the levels of phosphorus tested. The three azolla exhibited almost similar but mild susceptibility to Sclerotium sp. and some degree of tolerance to Rhizoctonia-like isolates. Further- tests on the disease tolerance and susceptibility must be performed during the period where climatic condition is most favorable for the diseases.
