Abstract
Meiotic cells of N. virescens males fed for me month with rice sprayed with 2500 ppm neem seed bitter (NSB) formulation were examined using the lacto-aceto-orcein squash technique. Treated samples had significantly lower mean meiotic and nucleoplasmic indices. Frequency of hypoploids increased while hyperploid frequency decreased. chromosome numbers varied from 4 to 9 with 6 and 7 being the mode. Significant changes in relative mean lengths of autosomes I and II were observed. All autosomes underwent variation from the regular dumbell shape to round or elongated. the sex chromosomes when present, often retained its circuit shape. Telophase changing was significantly greater in treated cells. Chromosomal aberrations such as rings and laggards occured at very low frequencies in both control and treated samples.
