Abstract

The study revealed that the chromosome number of Pouteria campechiana Baehni i s In 74. Its chromosome count was based on diakinesis and karyotype analysis. F. carnpechiana (HBK) baechni exhibited a normal meiotic behavior. Lower percentage of abnormalities were observed. These include early disjunction in metaphase 1, laggards in Anaphase 1 and Telophase 1 and Asynchronous division at Telophase 1. frequency of occurrence of sticky chromosomes was also observed at metaphase 1 and anaphase 1 stages. Karyotype analysis at prometaphase stage of somatic cells in P. campechiana showed that chromosome size ranged between 1.4 to 4. 3 /u. There are 12 acrocentric chromosomes, 6 metacentrie chromosomes, 4 submetacentric chromosomes, and 12 subacrocentric chromosomes.
