Abstract
Eight actinomycetes isolated from the soil were identified and screened for their ability to decolorize distillery effluent. One of the isolates belongs to the genus Nocardia while the rest belong to the genus Streptomyces. The highest 11 decolorization was obtained in the effluent treated with isolates belonging to the genus Streptomyces (Isolates no. 15 and 17), while the lo-west was obtained in the effluent treated with Isolates no. 12 and 13, also belonging to the genus Streptomyces. The pH was observed to decrease slightly in all the treatments although no direct relationship bet-ween extent of % decolorization and change in pH was discernible. • The increase in transmittance values was found to be caused by the decrease in pH as a result of the production of acids and not due to the degradation of the pigment.
