Abstract
Seeds of rice cultivars Nona Bokra (salt-tolerant) and IR36 (salt-intolerant were germinated and grown for four days under different levels of ethylene to determine root and coleoptile growth and root apical characteristics. Exposure of seedlings to exogenous ethylene from 0.1 to 10 w1L-1 resulted in significant increases in coleoptile and root length, and root meristem size in both cultivars compared with the control. Earlier differentiation was induced in Nona Bokra with 0.1 to 5w1L-1 ethylene in contrast to the late formation of root heirs in IR 36. It appears that the ethylene induced increased in length of root was related to the effect of the hormone on the size of the meristem and on cell elongation.
